Day 17- Enormous Spider!

This morning we had a $5 breakfast in Newcastle near the hostel, then we drove out to a cove with sand spits and a lighthouse. The sand was super fine, probably the finest sand I've seen and it felt so good to walk on. The waves were beautiful blue and they were crashing all over the place. We walked out on a pier that had huge cement blocks along the sides of it, like to protect from the waves or something. We drove south along the beaches, all of which had nice big rolling waves and lots of surfers out on them. We tried to go into a big park that has tide pools in it, but all the entrances were blocked off with police cars and some ambulances, so that was weird. Don't know what was going on there. Pat wants to get some sort of wetsuit so he can get out on the waves. I don't know what he'll end up going with that.
On our way north we stopped at a brewery on the side of the road that was really cool. They had all kinds of funky labels on their beers and Pat ended up buying a 4 pack of the “Whale Ale.” They were also playing Simon and Garfunkel music which made me incredibly happy as we were sitting out on the patio while Pat had a beer. So good :) We drove a little further up the coast and now we're in Nelson Bay for the night, parked up on a hill overlooking the water. Very pretty view and out of the way so it should be fine. I do just need to chill and enjoy this trip. The camper van is supposed to give you freedom to just stop wherever you want, it shouldn't cause me to worry so much or it's being counterproductive. Pat is doing well with adapting to it and I really want to do that better myself. I don't want to wish away the days on this trip because it's such a unique experience. I'll never do anything like it again I don't think, so even if it's hard sometimes I really want to make it a positive trip.
After writing this post we drove down to use the bathroom and on the way back a massive spider walked across the windshield. I couldn't help but yell as I was driving and even though I wanted to look away I had to keep looking at the road! Evil! This spider really was seriously huge. Like bordering on small tarantula. Blah! Apparently it's a huntsman spider. Scary. Now it's probably on the front of the car somewhere. I am going to be afraid to get out of the car in the morning :S
